Tempur pedic. You may have heard of the product before especially in relation to mattresses. But what exactly is Tempur Pedic memory foam? And how did this revolutionary product become so popular?

Well, back in the 1970’s when space discovery and exploration was at the American forefront, NASA started a project in which to solve an on-going problem of astronauts having to absorb extreme g-forces during take-off. The goal for NASA was to develop a product that would absorb the pressures instead of the astronauts absorbing the pressures: create a material that would mold to their body and relieve strain.

Although never used by NASA, a company from Sweden called Fagerdala World Foams saw the potential of this technology. After years of research and development a product which they named Tempur (later Tempur Pedic) was developed.

What is the secret of the Tempur Pedic?

The secret is in the billions of cells that make up what is called a visco-elastic foam material that is temperature sensitive. This foam is high density foam with memory cells which allow it to return to its original state once you get off of it. How this temperature sensitive material benefits the user is the Tempur foam reacts to body heat so that when you place your warm body on it, the foam molds around your body – contouring every curve. But do not let this soft comfort fool you into thinking that it is not firm, because it is of high density so you will get a firm support. Firm support comes from what is called memory cells and what they do or tend to do is the Tempur pedic foam wants to rebound to its original form. So in turn what occurs when you lay down is your body soaks into the foam in response to your body heat giving you a feeling of being cradled but the desire of the foam to rebound gives you the support you need at the contour points.
